We are very happy to welcome our new Musical Director Malcolm
E. Fallows, following the retirement of Brian Smith who has decided to take
a well-earned rest after many years service to the society. Malcolm
writes:
I first got the ‘Bug’ for G and S in 1961 -appearing as a page
boy in ‘The Gondoliers ’ and getting crushed during The
Cachucha - I was hooked !
I went to study singing at The Northern School of Music(now The
Royal Northern College of Music) and taught music in secondary
schools for 35 plus years, using singing as a major teaching
tool to motivate the pupils.
To fulfil my love of G and S I joined Orrell Operatic
Society singing many lead parts in Mikado, Pinafore,
Gondoliers, Princess Ida Iolanthe plus operettas Die Fledermaus
Orpheus in the Underworld, The New Moon, The Merry Widow and
many more.
I decided I wanted to try Musically Directing productions
instead of singing/acting—in them. This I did returning to Orrell
Operatic Society for ten shows MD 'ing shows ranging from
‘The Boyfriend’ to ‘ Calamity Jane’ for which I was nominated
for a NODA District 6 best MD award.
In the meantime I was a Church organist and choirmaster at a
couple of churches and conducted an accapella Choral Group as
well as composing musicals and arranging.
I was then invited to go to ‘Centenary Theatre Company’ based in
Warrington ,to MD ‘Singing in The Rain’ this I could not
resist. I am now into my eighth show with them ranging from ‘
Scrooge the Musical’ having been nominated and winning best
Musical Director award for the whole of NODA North West for
‘Titanic-the Musical 2010. I was delighted, as I am to be
working on the current Crosby Gilbert and Sullivan Society
show ‘Pirates’
I am married with two grown up daughters and five grandsons.
THE best of all worlds.
